I’m having a little trouble giving this a rating. Because I don’t normally dive into the horror genre, (I’m more of a murder mystery person, but an actual murder person) I don’t know where to rank the book. It was certainly creepy, and horrible, and unfortunately not very enjoyable, BUT if you like the horror genre, you’d probably like this book??? It was an interesting introduction to horror, but firmly cemented that it’s not for me.

Let’s discuss for a minute.

The main characters, a twelve year old girl, and her new friend Myles are interested in murders. Luckily, three have happened in the sleepy seaside town their staying in over the summer. The atmosphere was very much set from the beginning. The main character’s parents died in a boating accident, but the girl doesn’t mind. There’s something not quite right about her, as a social outcast and friendless loner…until Myles comes along. He’s equally creepy and twisted, and not above murder himself. Gosh, the whole book just gave me this feeling of unease.

I was expecting their to be more murder solving, rather than murder perpetuating.

I guess you can tell I didn’t like the book because I don’t want to devote too much time to reviewing it. Although I’m really thankful to Hot Key Books for making this book available to all of their reviewers, it’s not my kind of book. I’d say Emerald Fennell was extremely successful in writing a book about monstrous children and the consequences of horrid actions. It fits into the genre well. Therefore, I’m not going to give it a star rating, because I feel that would be unfair. Instead I’ll say, read it if you’re comfortable with it, but if, like me, you couldn’t stomach the idea of reading ‘The Wasp Factory’, perhaps this isn’t for you.

Watch ‘Call the Midwife’ instead, that’s beautiful.
