So many people on BookTube rave about the writing and books of Jennifer L. Armentrout. I was super intrigued to pick up the first in the Lux series, ‘Obsidian’, to get a taste of the author and see what all the fuss is about. As is usually the case with hyped books, I was disappointed. Trouble, as you can probably tell from the excellently designed cover, is about pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy. I’ve only ever read one book that deals with this topic before, ‘Someone Like You’ by Sarah Dessen, and I think I was a little too young to appreciate it. So, I was really excited to read about this new and interesting topic and how it would be dealt with, especially since on the blurb it says the pregnant girl, Hannah, is only 15. Note: In the UK it is illegal to have sex before the age of 16. If sex occurs with a minor, this is statutory rape and a criminal offense. PRISON WORTHY. Non Pratt, therefore, was writing about a difficult situation. How did it play off? Well…  Continue reading “Review: Trouble by Non Pratt”

I was sold on the idea that this book would be ‘unlike any angels I’ve read before’, it certainly had something I’d never read before – and it wasn’t the angel apocalypse. Angelfall was a lot slower than I was expecting and even though I’d heard a lot of reviews mentioning the horror element I was still surprised by how revolting and vivid the description was. I should have taken my great apathy towards horror movies – the scariest film I’ve ever seen probably being The Black Cauldron, I mean, come on! The Horned King is too creepy for the under tens. – as an indication that I should stay clear. However, I gave it a go and here are my thoughts!

Mermaid fiction + Summer = The perfect read. I was beyond excited to read another YA about mermaids, as ‘Deep Blue’ by Jennifer Donnelly fell a little below the mark. I knew what I wanted from this book, and Dockrill certainly delivered, I couldn’t put it down! Warning: there will be an excess of exclamation points in this review! (!!!)

I haven’t read a vampire book since Vampire Academy, and I thought I’d read it all. Oh boy, was I wrong! The Immortal Rules is an incredible dystopian/ paranormal blend that introduces vampires as you’ve never read them before. At first I was hesitant, but I’m so glad I gave it a change. I loved the world building and all of the characters. This book went in so many different directions that you never could have predicted the ending from how it started.

There has been a lot of controversy in the booktube community surrounding this book, and I have to say that I am equally as confused as the majority. I’ve been mulling over what to write in this review for a few days and I still haven’t quite organised my thoughts. Did I like it? Did I find it frustrating? The one thing I can say for sure was that I liked the writing style. Aveyard used a lot of the same descriptors for certain classifications of character, which was a little boring, but I loved her end of chapter hooks. They really contributed to me need to keep reading.

With this review, I’m just going to dive right in with my feelings.

Romance
Normally, I’m down for a good love-hate relationship. Good example: Bea and Ben from Much Ado. Unfortunately, I could probably use Lilac and Tarver as my bad example. In the first chapter, I thought all was well. They were both instantly attracted to each other, and I was looking forward to a no-nonsense romance. The next chapter was just full of social prejudice and judgements based on class, I couldn’t handle it. Neither character could admit to liking one another because they either thought they weren’t good enough, or it would be unacceptable in their social circle. Gah, I just could NOT put up with it. If they’d communicated their internal issues, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Having to read half a book with sentences like ‘I wanted to slap her. I wanted to kiss her,’ and ‘I know what we could do in one bed’, made me feel extremely uncomfortable.

The TBR dictated that I was going to be reading the Dust Lands trilogy this month, so I powered on through the series and eventually I finished it. I didn’t really have enough to say on the books individually because they didn’t really grab my attention, and I’ll admit that I was skimming my way through the majority of the second half of these books.

So, the first book in the series ended in a bit of a cliffhanger. Such a big part of Vivian’s life was revealed that would alter what she did from now. I’m not going to spoil anything, however, so don’t worry. I just wanted to talk about what a successful, if slightly repetitive sequel this was!

Firstly, this cover is ridiculously beautiful. Secondly, I’m not getting any sleep tonight! Seed was haunting and had me so on edge throughout the whole book. There’s this giant sense of foreboding that something has to go terribly wrong. Part of me wished I could unread this book because it was just so unsettling!
