I dubbed 2015 the year of the contemporary mystery thriller, and even though I read a lot last year I still had a few lined up that I still wanted to read. This title is so enticing I just had to know what happened! I was really engrossed upon first picking this book up, it had a wonderful Pretty Little Liars vibe with the main character, June having lost her ex-best friend after it’s announced in a school assembly that Delia killed herself. June doesn’t really believe Delia would do something like that, so she gets sucked up in a quest to find out what really happened to her best friend.

I have to say that I was slightly confused upon starting Enders since it’s been such a long time since I read Starters. I couldn’t quite remember who the main character was outside of her enhanced body and how was the evil again? Why is this Old Man’s voice in her head? This book didn’t do a great job of quickly summarising the first book, but eventually I found my way back.

I was so unbelievably excited to read this book. Fire With Fire was one of my favourite books of the year and I needed to know what happened next. I’d seen a couple of reviews floating around Goodreads about how rushed the ending was and how it wasn’t as great as the other book in the series, but I refused to believe this would be the case. How could it be when Fire With Fire had been SO GOOD? But boy oh boy was I proven wrong. Ashes to Ashes was rushed and the ending was straight up ridiculous. What we have here, ladies and gentleman, is a perfect example of wasted potential.

(Disclaimer: you should still read this series if you haven’t because the first two books are 5 star reads and totally worth it, but just prepare yourself for a disappointing ending.)

There’s one ghost that he’s determined to destroy: Anna Dressed In Blood, the ghost of a girl wronged the night of her prom, she haunts a house in the town that Cas’s mum has just relocated him too. Anna Dressed In Blood is a mild horror (with elements of comedy and romance) that probably contains a lot of the horror movie tropes those fans of the genre will recognise. Seeing as I don’t particularly enjoy horror myself, this was a… weird read.

You see, I can’t help but be slightly disappointed with this series. At first the Harry Potter parallels were obvious, and it’s going to be hard to separate the two considering it’s 2 boys, 1 girl at a magical school hidden from the regular world. I mean, we all see what’s going on here. And I seriously hoped that by book two they would have moved away from HP and I hate to admit that the plot line is still basically the same with the characters roles switched up a bit.

Upon going to university, I’ve found that it’s incredibly difficult to find time to read. I mean, I have time to read, but when the rest of my flatmates are embroiled in discussion about gender identity, it’s kind of hard to stay in my room catching up on the October new releases. After 3 weeks, so mostly spending time with these guys, I think I can justify pulling out of a Marvel marathon to catch up on some much needed reading and reviewing – I have missed it after all. Unfortunately, I’m rather disappointed that The Potion Diaries was the first book I decided to dedicate my precious free time to.

This book should be subtitled: Caleana Sardothien is dead and gone, so don’t expect anything. Okay, so I’m not this series’ biggest fan – it’s got plenty of those already – and it’s no secret that I didn’t really enjoy Heir of Fire either, however Queen of Shadows takes the biscuit. After all the hype I was reading on GoodReads I found this book to be terribly disappointing.

Firstly, this cover is ridiculously beautiful. Secondly, I’m not getting any sleep tonight! Seed was haunting and had me so on edge throughout the whole book. There’s this giant sense of foreboding that something has to go terribly wrong. Part of me wished I could unread this book because it was just so unsettling!

Before reading the sequel, I decided to re-read ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’, which, retrospectively, was a mistake. There’s only so much cutesy, non-consequential writing you can read before it gets sickening.
From the 2 star rating, you can probably tell, we didn’t like this book. I guess, after not enjoying the rest of Jenny Han’s books, it wasn’t a surprise, but part of us wanted this one to be the one to redeem the rest. But…
