This is the second, and I presume final book in The Alchemy Chronicles. I feel very lucky that I got to read them one after the other, instead of waiting the year for The Secret City to come out, because I was completely engrossed with the first book. It was action packed and incredibly well paced, so I was genuinely excited to get around to this book. The acknowledgements of book one also seemed to suggest that there was only one more book in the series, and if there’s anything that’s going to make me want to read a sequel more, it’s knowing that it’s the second of a duology rather than the middle book of a trilogy! I mean, really, I’m glad that this is the end, because it definitely feels like a story told in two parts, where book one sets up all the action and conflict, introducing us to the world, and book two is resolving the issues and ramping up the tension just a few more notches before the end!

I picked up The Secret Fire when I saw C.J. Daughter speak about Feminism in YA with Holly Bourne and Holly Smale. It was an absolutely incredible event, and though C.J was mostly talking about her Night School series (which I was reading at the time and wasn’t really enjoying) I really wanted to read this one, and I am overjoyed to say that I really liked it!

Note: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. 

Somehow, this book was so much more and so much less than I was expecting, which seems like a bit of a weird statement to begin with, but bare with me. I was expecting the ‘researching the Manson murders’ to be a bigger thing that it was. I was constantly expecting a new murder to take place, which just shows how I’ve come to expect things from this genre, when what I should actually be doing is expecting surprises. So, although My Favourite Manson Girl was not the books I was expecting, I really enjoyed the gritty realism and conflicting emotions of Anna’s life. In America the book is titled American Girls  and I think all the images that come that are a lot more accurate than My Favourite Manson Girl, because I was constantly expecting some Nancy Drew mystery to pop up.

Review: Night School by C. J. Daugherty

First of all I should mention, that I really wanted to LOVE this book. I met C.J.Daugherty a few weeks ago and what she was saying about the progression of her characters got me so PUMPED to read it. Even though I already knew that the biggest complaint about Night School was the amount of times that Allie gets saved by one of the male protagonists – which is a lot – I was still surprised by it. C. J. said that Allie realising that she could be the one to save herself became one of the biggest internal arcs of the story and I thought that sounded exactly like something I would enjoy. That, and it’s a boarding school setting. I love those! Unfortunately, every time I cringed or eye-rolled I had to knock off a point from each star, so my overall rating is lowlowlow.
