‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’ is the perfect example of a ‘Bee Book’. She read it first and really enjoyed it, even though there were no faeries involved. So, I was tentative to try it out – our taste in books doesn’t differ that much, but this has been sat on Bee’s shelf for so long, I kind of forgot I could read it.
Bee never knew how to describe it to me, and now I totally understand why. A lot happens in DOSAB, that it’s hard to categorise it by genre. It literally fits no conventions, and I think that’s what’s made it so successful!

Okay, so the epilogues for this series so far are incredible! I need Soldier in my possession ASAP. How I’m supposed to go on when the final reveal changes EVERYTHING I don’t know! Rogue is a great sequel to Talon; it’s just as action-packed, with 100% more conspiracy. I have to say that I missed the blend of the contemporary/fantasy thing Talon had going on, but this series is definitely heading in an interesting and new direction.

Readalong Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

throne of glassI read ‘Throne of Glass’ as part of my first read-along with a friend of Goodreads! I thought as well as posting my formal review of ‘Throne of Glass‘, you may be interested to read my immediate thoughts on different parts of the book! But be warned, there are going to be spoilers, so only read this post if you’ve already read the book. So, ready for the bullet point style of notes?

This book was so action packed, it literally never stopped! The amount of content in this series so far really is incredible, and the pacing is perfect for a fantasy novel, where the world needs detailed explanations. I was literally in shock after Part One, after which I thought the story went downhill, but about 100 pages from the end, man, did it pick up rapidly!

Bee and I got the opportunity to read ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses‘ a few months back, which meant we read Maas’s books in kind of the wrong order. Everyone loves the Throne of Glass series. Everyone loves Maas’s writing style and the fantasy setting. Well, when ACTR fell a little short of the mark, we didn’t know what to expect when it came to reading her debut. Thankfully, it was AMAZING. Here’s what we thought…

We were given a copy of Shadow Study at a blogger event hosted by MIRA Ink, where we also got to meet the author and have the book signed! It’s been quite a while since I read the Study series, but Yelena is one of my all time favourite characters so of course I had to read this new instalment straight away! Shadow Study was packed full of intrigue and mystery, making it the perfect starter to a new series that will appeal to both old and new readers! However, if you don’t want to be spoiled on the Glass Series we suggest you read Opal’s trilogy first!

Yes! I can finally finish the Glass series! I’ve had these books on my shelves literally for years, and I kinda wish I hadn’t put them off! Opal went through a massive change in personality in the previous book so it was interesting to see where she was going to end up. I think I enjoyed this book the most out of the series, surprisingly, because it had everything I needed! In my previous review I made comments about needing Valek, Pazia and more on the Bloodrose clan, and Maria certainly delivered!

There is no doubt that this was an epic finale to a trilogy. Yelena really did come in to her own, and harness the power she possessed since ‘Poison Study’. However, I must admit that ‘Fire Study’ was my least favourite of the series, even though it was still excellent and to say ‘least favourite’ makes it sound a lot worse! I’ve had this series sat on my shelves for a ridiculously long time, and I’ve been mostly afraid to pick it up because of the length! I don’t think my hiatus from Ixia and Sitia hindered my enjoyment, even though I’d forgotten who Kade was. (Oops!) The Glass series takes place four years after the end of Fire Study, but instead of following Yelena this series revolved around Opal, the Glass Magician.

The sequel to the epic ‘Poison Study’ is just as jam-packed with action and adventure, as Yelena continues her quest to harness the magic she possesses, whilst hunting down a criminal rogue who steals souls in the night. I was very surprised to give ‘Magic Study’ 4 stars, as it’s often the case that sequels decrease in quality compared to the debut. However, ‘Magic Study’ completely defies this stereotype and makes this series even more worth reading! Continue reading “Review: Magic Study by Maria V Snyder”
