This is the end of a series that’s very dear to my heart, so before I share my thoughts on Dawn Study, I though I’d give a brief history of my time with the Chronicles of Ixia. So, I first picked up Poison Study for £2 from a bargain bookstore in 2012, and they had all three books in the first trilogy but I decided to only pick up one because I’ve bought a full series and been disappointed before. I took the book on holiday and read it over a few days and I was dying for the sequel. As soon as I was back in England I bought the other books!

Then a year or so later I found the Glass series which is the sequel trilogy in the same world but featuring a minor character from Fire Study and I had those on my shelf for ages before I finally picked them up because Shadow Study was coming out and I didn’t want to be spoiled on anything just incase. So, I whipped through those three books and it felt like coming home. I adore the writing style and the world is so rich, every book is entertaining.

I requested Shadow Study on Netgalley, but didn’t get approved, and then a while after got an email from the lovely Cara at Harlequin inviting us down to their offices for a blogger party where we’d get the chance to actually meet Maria! I can still remember how excited I was getting this email and I can go straight back to the moment I saw it online (I was supposed to be doing History coursework, and whacked the guy sat next to me in my flailing excitement!) I still think that night was one of the best EVER. It was great to meet so many bloggers and Maria herself! I didn’t bring all my books to sign because I thought that would be way to many, but I wish I had now! And I’ve been following the Soulfinders series ever since! It’s definitely been hard waiting a year for each book, when previously I’ve been able to binge, but the wait was definitely worth it!

I received a copy of this book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Finally! I feel as if Night Study has found some of the original magic that made me fall in love with the Study series in the first place. Shadow Study was okay, but it wasn’t the best opener to a new series, but Night Study raised the bar so much, meaning I’m now super pumped to read the finale! Night Study is literally bursting with awesome characters, intense magic and complicated villains. If you haven’t gotten lost in the Chronicles of Ixia yet then you’ve got a lot of reading a head of you.

Inside Out and Outside In by Maria V. Snyder
Genre: Sci-Fi, Dystopian

Format: Paperback
Rating: ★★.5

I’ve made it my goal this year to try and read all of Maria V. Snyder’s works. It’ve been an avid reader of her Study series for a really long time, and her foray into dystopian sounded like exactly the kind of thing I would like. In a world were people are separated into Upper and Lowers, where the Lowers look after everyone by doing the jobs no one wants to do, we follow Trella, a scrub, who just might know how to get people to the elusive Outside where they can’t be controlled by an oppressive society run by the Controllers.

We were given a copy of Shadow Study at a blogger event hosted by MIRA Ink, where we also got to meet the author and have the book signed! It’s been quite a while since I read the Study series, but Yelena is one of my all time favourite characters so of course I had to read this new instalment straight away! Shadow Study was packed full of intrigue and mystery, making it the perfect starter to a new series that will appeal to both old and new readers! However, if you don’t want to be spoiled on the Glass Series we suggest you read Opal’s trilogy first!

MIRAInk Blogger Event: Meeting Maria V Snyder

On the 25th March, we were invited by MIRAInk to a blogger event as part of Maria V Snyder’s UK tour, for the release of her newest book Shadow Study, the first in a new series called ‘Soulfinders’, that follows Yelena from Poison Study. As you can guess, we were beyond excited as Bee is the biggest fan of the ‘Study Series’ and will happily claim Yelena to be her favourite female protagonist of all time (next to Amy Curry, from Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour, of course!)

The event took place in the MIRAInk offices (such lovely, lovely offices) in Surrey and was to begin at 7:30pm. As well as getting to meet Maria and get our books signed, (we had a lot of them!) we got the chance to meet some other bloggers as well, who were such friendly, great people!

So, once we’d all been acquainted with our name tags and the refreshments, we got to meet Maria. I think everyone was a little starstruck as we listen to her talk about her family and her cat (named Valek!). It’s strange to imagine authors not sat at desks, typing away at their next masterpiece!

bloggersThen ‘The Mingling’ commenced!  We all talked about our blogs and what we’d most recently read, but after that we started to just talk about Game of Thrones and student life and general bookish wonder. I loved going into a room filled with people I already had so much in common with –  bloggers are an excellent breed of human 🙂

We also got recognised (?!?!) from our YouTube channel, which was pretty amazing! Cara, the lovely lady who invited us to the event, asked us about our channel and the different mediums we all use to talk about books. It’s great that there are so many different ways to share how much we love literature!

Getting to meet Maria was amazing! She was so funny and interesting, and asked us what it’s like to be twins. We’re going to see her again on 6th April, so hope to get to talk to her more then 🙂

When it was time to go, we got a very adorable neon pink gift bag, with two books, an Easter egg, nail varnish and a notebook (oooh!) Overall, it was such a lovely event and we cannot express how thankful we are to MIRAInk for the invitation! It’s a night we’ll always remember – thank you for the books, Maria and the new friends ❤

There is no doubt that this was an epic finale to a trilogy. Yelena really did come in to her own, and harness the power she possessed since ‘Poison Study’. However, I must admit that ‘Fire Study’ was my least favourite of the series, even though it was still excellent and to say ‘least favourite’ makes it sound a lot worse! The sequel to the epic ‘Poison Study’ is just as jam-packed with action and adventure, as Yelena continues her quest to harness the magic she possesses, whilst hunting down a criminal rogue who steals souls in the night. I was very surprised to give ‘Magic Study’ 4 stars, as it’s often the case that sequels decrease in quality compared to the debut. However, ‘Magic Study’ completely defies this stereotype and makes this series even more worth reading! Continue reading “Review: Magic Study by Maria V Snyder”

If you watch our videos, you probably know that Bee absolutely adores ‘The Chronicles of Ixia’ series and will happily call Yelena from the ‘Poison Study’ quartet her favourite female character. So, I thought it was about time that I saw what all the fuss was about. Boy, was I pleased with the result! ‘Poison Study’ is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Usually, when I’m reading a book, I notice multiple similarities with something else. I think it helps that I haven’t read much of the high fantasy genre, but after this, I’ve very excited to read more of Bee’s favourite books! Continue reading “Review: Poison Study by Maria V Snyder”
