At the beginning of last year – oh my goodness, is it that long ago all ready? – I read the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu, and it made it onto my favourite books of the year, so I had high hopes for the first book in her next series that came out a few years ago and, I think, the third book comes out this year. I’d heard a lot about The Young Elites on BookTube, because everyone was saying how different it was and how dark the main characters was, and I agree, it was different and Adelina definitely listened to her dark side, but I was expecting a lot more.

WOW. Like, seriously. Wow. Wolf By Wolf has to be one of the best books I read in January. I was hooked from the very beginning, and I have a feeling that Yael will quickly become one of my favourite heroines. Luckily for me, this is going to be a trilogy – even though I do have some concerns about where this could go – so we’ll be seeing more of Yael soon! If you haven’t heard of this book, it’s about Yael who is a skin-shifter, after being experimented on in a concentration-camp-like environment, and as part of the rebellion against the Nazi regime, she is going to adopt Adele Wolf motocross champion’s identity and try to win the race from Germany to Japan, because it will give her the perfect opportunity to kill Hitler. If you don’t think that sounds like a crazy wild time, definitely worth a read, then I don’t know does!

Finally! I feel as if Night Study has found some of the original magic that made me fall in love with the Study series in the first place. Shadow Study was okay, but it wasn’t the best opener to a new series, but Night Study raised the bar so much, meaning I’m now super pumped to read the finale! Night Study is literally bursting with awesome characters, intense magic and complicated villains. If you haven’t gotten lost in the Chronicles of Ixia yet then you’ve got a lot of reading a head of you.

I was sent Moth Girls by Hot Key Books in exchange for my honest review.

WOW. Just wow. I was drawn to this book like a moth to a flame. Anne Cassidy has created a story which is compelling, character driven and impossible to put down. I wasn’t expecting much from Moth Girls after having read so much in this genre last year, but I was completely blown away by how beautifully this story was crafted and how invested I was in these characters. I just could not stop reading. Moth Girls follows Mandy five years after two of her friends Petra and Tina are presumed dead after sneaking in to a old house owned by a reclusive man. She blames herself for what happened to the girls and has struggled to let them go, and move on with her life. Until the house is being knocked down and it looks like one of the girls isn’t gone after all.

I’ve made it my goal this year to try and read all of Maria V. Snyder’s works. It’ve been an avid reader of her Study series for a really long time, and her foray into dystopian sounded like exactly the kind of thing I would like. In a world were people are separated into Upper and Lowers, where the Lowers look after everyone by doing the jobs no one wants to do, we follow Trella, a scrub, who just might know how to get people to the elusive Outside where they can’t be controlled by an oppressive society run by the Controllers.

I dubbed 2015 the year of the contemporary mystery thriller, and even though I read a lot last year I still had a few lined up that I still wanted to read. This title is so enticing I just had to know what happened! I was really engrossed upon first picking this book up, it had a wonderful Pretty Little Liars vibe with the main character, June having lost her ex-best friend after it’s announced in a school assembly that Delia killed herself. June doesn’t really believe Delia would do something like that, so she gets sucked up in a quest to find out what really happened to her best friend.

I requested The Casquette Girls because of the New Orleans setting which seemed pretty perfect for a witchy story. I did not know however, that I was signing up for a vampire book as well. If vampires and witches are alive in this universe does that mean other supernatural creatures will be added as the series continues? I’m not sure if I’m willing to stick around long enough to find out.

Everyone on booktube seemed to be talking about The Accident Season, which is really cool since it’s UKYA! When it popped up at my local library I decided to give it a go! Unfortunately, it was a bit too abstract and unsatisfying for my tastes. The premise sounded so good(!): For about one month every year Cara, her sister and step-brother always seem to be getting injured; they’re basically attracted to unfortunate situations. Like the Series of Unfortunate Events but with teenagers and a more realistic contemporary background. However, even by the end of the novel, it’s still ridiculously ambiguous as to why the Accident Season is a thing and there are a few awkward relationships that aided my conclusion that this book really wasn’t for me.

I decided I needed to read everything by Leila Sales practically as soon as I finished Tonight The Streets Are Ours. It was an instant decision, and one of the best I made in 2015. Although I didn’t like TSWSYL and much, as indicated by the star rating, it was still an amazing eye-opening read. It starts with Elise who feels like she is completely alone and doesn’t fit in so she decides the next logical step is to kill herself. Heavy, right?
